Derby College provided with new ICT infrastructure

Derby College provided with new ICT infrastructure for their iconic £43m regeneration project.

Carillion IT Services* today announced it has been appointed by Derby College to install a new fixed and wireless Local Area Network (LAN) infrastructure as part of its pioneering £43 million redevelopment to become a true 21st century College. One of the largest Further Education Colleges in the country, Derby College currently has over 20,500 students and 1,500 staff. It offers a wide range of vocational and academic courses to learners of all ages and abilities.

The contract, which initially runs for five years, will see Carillion deliver the design, implementation and maintenance of a new future-proof, scaleable LAN infrastructure and wireless network based on Cisco technology, which will form the backbone of the stunning new flagship ‘Roundhouse’ campus in the heart of the city. Once implemented, the new wireless network will provide the College’s students and staff with a reliable, flexible and secure communications platform, delivering the ability to work ‘anytime, anyplace, anywhere.’

Derby College’s regeneration scheme, due for completion in March this year, has involved the renovation and modernisation of an 1839 grade II listed steam engine repair building in the centre of Derby. This imaginative project has already been recognised as one of the top 20 conservation schemes in the country and the new flagship campus will be ready to receive students this autumn.

Drew Keavey, IT Director, Derby College, commented: “The Roundhouse campus will offer modern, flexible spaces set within a beautifully restored part of Derby’s industrial heritage which will inspire learners for years to come. Innovative technology was a key part of the vision for the Roundhouse and Derby College has a clear strategy to embed IT within all aspects of the campus. In Carillion, we have found a partner who shares that vision and was able to provide a solution that will support us in delivering the best learning environment possible. Not only is the solution innovative, it will also allow us to reduce our long term operational costs. Overall, the project will help to enrich and re-invigorate Derby, providing College learners and staff with cutting-edge facilities and the very latest technology in a stimulating and dynamic environment.”

Noel McNulty, Managing Director of Carillion IT Services*, added: “The provision of a wireless network fits perfectly into the innovative Roundhouse redevelopment at Derby College. The new site will create a unique learning space by merging the historical features of a stunning listed building with new contemporary facilities, providing a true 21st century learning space. Carillion is delighted to be contributing towards the College’s on-going success by providing a robust, future-proof IT infrastructure to underpin ‘always on’ access to the network.”

*Carillion IT Services* Ltd is now trading as Capita IT Services as of 01/07/09.
