Delivering Stockport’s ‘College of the Future’

Delivering Stockport’s ‘College of the Future'.

Stockport College is set to become the UK’s first 21st Century ‘College of the Future’ with Carillion IT Services* commencing work on an innovative £1.4 million contract with the OFSTED ‘Outstanding’ and Beacon status college. The project forms part of the college’s £100m state of the art new build flagship campus.

As Stockport College’s technology partner, Carillion IT Services* is providing design consultancy services and programme management for an IT system that will help the college to deliver a super-infrastructure to support its 8,500 students. The project begins with the design, configuration and installation of technology demonstration suites to introduce the first class learning space of the future. This will deploy unified communications, wireless, RFID, integrated building management systems, digital signage and audio visual technology.

Peter Roberts, principal of Stockport College, commented "Building on our OFSTED and Beacon award we are delighted that this exciting new phase in the college’s history has now begun. Delivering the means for students and staff to work in a flexible and progressive setting is a key priority and we are confident that working with Carillion IT Services* will enable us to achieve our vision of providing a true 21st century learning environment in Stockport".

Once fully implemented, the new robust, future-proofed IT network will provide total flexibility for students and staff alike. The core infrastructure, based on Cisco technology, will form the backbone for the whole college. It will run multiple services such as voice, video, data, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), IP CCTV, access control and many other applications - ultimately enabling students to learn anytime, anyplace, anywhere and via a medium that suits them. Stockport College is the first college in the UK to adopt the Carillion IT Services* Intelligent Building solution; a building management system that does not simply co-exist on the network, but provides interoperability between multiple devices to allow decisions to be made proactively about environmental conditions of the building and how they can be controlled.

Noel McNulty, Managing Director of Carillion IT Services* commented "This ground breaking project for a college at the very cutting edge of educational delivery further enhances our commitment to providing the very best IT support to the education sector. Being Stockport College’s technology partner of choice from the beginning has ensured that the specific deliverables required by them have been considered, designed and incorporated into our proposed Intelligent Building solution".

Tim Liney, Cisco business leader for Higher and Further Education commented, "Technology can enable easier access to learning and support teaching, helping to attract new students, improve the workplace and minimise costs through managed heating and lighting. We believe that Stockport’s investment is an excellent example of the strategic use of technology to improve the education experience."

*Carillion IT Services* Ltd is now trading as Capita IT Services as of 01/07/09.
