Capita delivers £15m IT upgrade for Leicester schools

10,000 pupils in sixteen different schools in Leicester have benefited from a £15m upgrade to their IT equipment and services.

Over the past 18 months, 10,000 pupils in sixteen different schools in Leicester have benefited from a £15m upgrade to their IT equipment and services, delivered by Capita Managed IT Solutions through Leicester City Council’s ‘Building Schools for the Future’ (BSF) program.

The schools, which represent Wave 3-6 of a wider BSF programme, are now benefiting from a range of new technology and services, including cloud services, enterprise class infrastructure, specialist audio-visual installation and the provision of personal devices.

The programme has supplied more than 5,000 devices, including laptops, PCs, tablets, including Apple devices, and interactive white boards. Every school now uses Office365, providing cloud-based email and off-site data storage, allowing staff and pupils to access their work on any device, at any time.

Capita has worked with a number of the schools to deliver customised, innovative solutions to fit their specific needs. Nether Hall School – a foundation Special School for pupils with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties – is now benefiting from the introduction of cutting-edge new media software and equipment.

Nether Hall uses video recording to assess learning progress and evaluate pupils, rather than traditional exams and coursework. Planet e-Stream – a content management and media delivery system – will allow teachers much more flexibility in working with these videos, dramatically increasing the amount of searchable data for each clip and allowing teachers to ‘tag’ specific moments to support their assessments.

Novel solutions also include the installation of a 6.5 metre video wall in the main hall of St. Paul’s Catholic School, which uses matrix technology with fully integrated sound and projection. This allows schools to run interactive events for large groups of students, as well as opening up commercial opportunities for out-of-hours use. Keyham, Millgate, English Martyrs and Babington Community College have recently announced they have appointed Capita to continue running their IT support services once the BSF contract ends in 2015

"Capita has delivered for city schools in the context of an extremely complex and challenging accelerated build programme. It has ensured the new schools IT systems and equipment are up and running without disruption to the day to day activities of the schools."
Josie Fraser, ICT lead for Leicester City Council

"Each school in the programme has seen a dramatic improvement in the strength and reliability of their IT services, and the new equipment allows teachers to work much more flexibly."
