Capita acquires healthcare informatics specialist

Capita acquires healthcare informatics specialist, CHKS Ltd.

The Capita Group Plc ("Capita"), announced today that it has acquired CHKS Limited from Healthcare Knowledge International for a consideration of £11.6 million. CHKS provides healthcare intelligence and quality improvement services to healthcare professionals.

The acquisition adds depth and breadth of expertise to Capita's existing services for the health market, which includes running the NHS Choices programme.

CHKS pioneered the UK healthcare intelligence market with hospital benchmarking in 1989. Since then, it has  developed a range of solutions and has over 90 NHS trusts as clients. Its services range from coding, data and performance management to benchmarking, accreditation, quality assurance, standards development, health economics and predictive modelling.

CHKS made an operating profit, on a pro forma basis, for its financial year to 31 December 2008 of £1.6 million on turnover of £8 million.

Commenting on the deal, Paul Pindar, Chief Executive of The Capita Group Plc said: "This acquisition will add important new expertise to Capita's range of health services and effectively complements the work we are doing for NHS Choices, in developing the way the NHS connects with the public. The deal also further demonstrates Capita's commitment to, and investment in, the health sector.

"As one of the largest providers of health informatics and benchmarking in the UK, CHKS will allow us not only to provide more and better services to existing clients but will also provide a strong platform to gain further business across the market."

CHKS employs around 80 staff based mainly in Alcester, Cardiff and London.
