BAA appoint preferred supplier

BAA appoint preferred supplier of network infrastructure and cabling services.

Carillion IT Services* today announced it has been awarded a major contract for the provision of a Structured Cabling System (SCS) for BAA’s new Terminal 5C (T5C) at Heathrow Airport, the additional satellite building currently under construction at Terminal 5. T5C, consisting of seven floors, will be used exclusively by British Airways. It is due for completion in 2011.

The contract will see Carillion IT Services* provide a high-performance copper and fibre cable infrastructure throughout the terminal, using ADC KRONE’s TrueNet® Structured Cabling Solution. This will include Category 6 cabling to 5000 data outlets and the provision of steel wire armoured fibre optic cables for harsh environments, supporting all airport systems within T5C. This covers everything from supplying the data for passenger information displays, gate desk computer systems and baggage handling security, as well as 15 retail units and 12 local aircraft stands.

Carillion IT Services* was awarded the contract through a competitive tendering process by Carillion Building, which is constructing T5C on behalf of BAA, fending off strong competition from three leading Cabling Companies from within the airport services market place.

Overseeing the construction of T5C for Carillion Building is Operations Director James Hindes, who commented: “Carillion IT Services* offered commitment and good value and we are delighted to be working with them. Carillion IT Services* have already demonstrated their abilities and expertise in working successfully for BAA within a live airfield, at the world’s busiest international airport. We are therefore confident that they can deliver the project within this kind of environment.”

In addition to T5C, Carillion IT Services* has been providing cabling services to BAA’s Scottish airports for 16 years and in June 2008 signed an initial four year framework agreement with BAA IT for on-site services. This includes cabling for voice, data and other airport specific network systems, cabling for new projects and ‘break fix’ maintenance for existing cabling infrastructures across all seven BAA UK airports, including Heathrow.

Commenting on the deal Noel McNulty, Managing Director of Carillion IT Services*, said: “We are delighted to be involved in this major investment programme at Heathrow, which further enhances our position as an airport service provider. We’ve demonstrated our expertise working in live airport environments and strengthened a successful working relationship with BAA over a number of years. This construction contract also shows the combined strength of the Carillion group and its companies with our business providing cabling infrastructure and IT services across a growing number of Carillion Building projects.”

*Carillion IT Services* Ltd is now trading as Capita IT Services as of 01/07/09.
